La coreógrafa portuguesa Vera Mantero presentó Os Serrenhos do Caldeirão, exercicis en atropologia de ficció, en La Caldera de Barcelona, dentro del Festival Grec, durante dos días. El primero, el 19 de julio, la sala estaba completamente llena. Primero me alegré. Luego me pregunté por qué hay veces que se llena y otras no. ¿Porque Vera Mantero es una reconocida coreógrafa que hace tiempo que no actuaba en Barcelona? Seguramente. ¿Pero por qué otras magníficas propuestas que últimamente programa La Caldera no se llenan así? (¿O sus absolutamente necesarios talleres, dada la lamentable situación de la educación artística en Catalunya?) ¿Porque no están dentro de un festival como el Grec, que cuenta con una difusión excepcional, con anuncios en televisión hasta durante el descanso de los partidos del mundial de fútbol? Está claro cómo conseguir que el público acuda a donde sea, hasta a la presentación de propuestas que a priori hay quien está dispuesto a catalogar de arriesgadas. Sólo hace falta voluntad y dinero. Me pregunto por qué esa voluntad solo se manifiesta durante el Grec. En Barcelona, quiero decir. Creo conocer la respuesta y me entristece. Seguramente el mundo está mal repartido.
Os Serrenhos do Caldeirão es una pieza que tiene seis años. Es lo que ahora llamarían una conferencia performativa, aunque hace seis años no sé si alguien utilizaba esa expresión. Vera Mantero nos habla de las antiguas costumbres, perdidas ya o en riesgo de desaparecer completamente, de los habitantes de una parte del Algarve portugués del interior, en la sierra. Sobre todo se fija en el uso que hacen del canto. Y, en concreto, del canto que acompaña al trabajo. Se apoya en documentos sonoros y audiovisuales grabados por ella misma y, sobre todo, grabados por Michel Giacometti durante los años 70. Ella también canta. Y está acompañada por el tronco de un árbol, con el que acciona en varios momentos. También utiliza a John Cage, una entrevista, y a Antonin Artaud, de quien lee un texto. Se permite algunas licencias sobre el tema de estudio pero, con total honestidad, al final acabará poniendo los puntos sobre las íes. Es, por tanto, una ficción, pero basada en hechos reales. Con ella parece querer reivindicar un modo de vivir, asalvajado, según nuestros parámetros modernos, y aparentemente contradictorio. Un modo de vivir en el que el arte está completamente imbricado en la vida cotidiana, acompañando al trabajo, por ejemplo. Un modo de vivir con el que hemos perdido el contacto pero que seguramente estaba presente no solo en el Portugal rural anterior a los setenta sino en toda la Península ibérica. Un modo de vivir que, a simple vista, parece mucho más loco que el nuestro pero que, analizándolo con más atención, quizá haya que reconocer que era ciertamente más armonioso para con la naturaleza y seguramente más apropiado para el alma del ser humano. Un modo de vivir de gente analfabeta y muy contradictoria pero quizá infinitamente más sabia que nosotros. Mientras escuchaba a Vera Mantero pensé en esa frase que dice que menos de dos contradicciones es fascismo. Y también entendí por qué soy incapaz de mantener una conversación con mis padres, que provienen de la Galicia rural, muy parecida al ambiente que describe Vera Mantero, procurando mantener un mínimo, aunque sea un mínimo, de lógica. Después de ver Os Serrenhos do Caldeirão empiezo a entender que el problema quizá no sean ellos. Soy yo.
